Company History:

Security Design Consultants (“SDC”) was founded by Edward Curtis Smith on September 27, 1973.  Ed studied history at Yale and served on a destroyer escort in WWII, then began a long career in corporate sales. As burglary rates increased and Mr. and Mrs. Smith considered buying an alarm system, Ed came to realize that the choice of installation companies was limited and the systems generally unreliable. These systems included bulky contact switches on doors and windows, silver tape on large areas of glass and boxy microwave detectors. After more research, he discovered recessed ultrasonic detectors that tucked into the ceiling and stress sensors (strain gauges) that adhered to the floor joists in the basement. So one weekend, he installed his own alarm system and in so doing, he concluded that there was a need for a high quality alarm company in the area.  The Brooks Brothers suits went in the closet and he hired his first employee under the new company.

Ed’s son Brad came home to help out in January 1982 when Ed became gravely ill. Brad had studied social theory at UMass Amherst and was working in public relations in Washington, D.C. at the time. Unfortunately, Ed passed away a couple months later so Brad rolled up his sleeves and took over the business. Over the next five years, he focused on customer service. As technology improved with miniaturization and micro processing, the focus was on new technology and the result was a new era of exceptionally reliable and minimally obtrusive systems. Thus, SDC was started with the purpose of providing high quality alarm systems to a discerning clientele, and to this day, we have the same mission. The company has grown but it is still dedicated to reliability, quality workmanship and customer care.
