In many cases when the alarm goes off the system can catch the user off guard. Below are frequently asked questions.

Why didn’t anyone call when the alarm is going off?

During the brief period of the time that your system is sending the alarm signal to the Central Station, you will be unable to use your phone. That is because the alarm system seizes the telephone line and preempts normal telephone conversation. Only when all emergency  transmissions are complete will your telephone line be released.

Here are some tips to help you when using an alarm system that only uses one phone line:

Program the Central Station’s phone number into your cell phones for quick and easy access to the monitoring station for all of your family members.

Call our office when you change phone providers, in many cases customers forget to test the alarm when phone or other utility  companies are working in your home.

Please call the Security Design office when you have call list changes. The sooner the monitoring station knows the correct numbers to call it can save time and *possible false alarm fees imposed by your city or town.

If you have a second phone line in your home, that line could be used as the primary alarm system line. This will help you keep your primary home phone line free & clear for use.

Remember if you shut your phone service off—you are placing your  system in jeopardy for reporting alarms & events. This is important whether you have one or more residences that are being monitored thru Central Station.

Can the central station shut off my alarm system from their office?

No, the Central Station has no control over your alarm system. It can be armed & disarmed only from your premises by an authorized user.

Will the central station receive an alarm signal if the alarm is not armed?

No, Central Station will not receive an alarm signal. It is important to turn your alarm on, even when you are at home. Use your perimeter protection whenever possible. Perimeter protection is an option that allows you to move freely inside your home while all doors and windows are armed.

If my phone line gets damaged, the line goes dead or gets cut  what happens?

Normally if your phone line gets disabled due tampering, severe weather, or construction, your alarm will not reach the Central Station. The Central Station is a critical part of your alarm system. Besides your phone line there are other monitoring options. Call SDC for details.
